Root Canals & Endodontics

Preserve your natural smile with expert endodontic care

At The Temple Practice, West Park Dental, and West Yorkshire Dental Referral Centre, we specialise in advanced root canal and endodontic treatments designed to save natural teeth and alleviate discomfort. Our experienced team utilises the latest techniques and technology to ensure effective, comfortable, and long-lasting results.

Experienced in endodontics
Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a procedure aimed at treating infection or inflammation within the pulp—the soft tissue inside your tooth. By removing the affected tissue, cleaning and disinfecting the root canals, and sealing them, we can preserve your natural tooth and prevent the need for extraction .

Rob Finch was an early adopter of a microscope for most aspects of dental care and has lectured on the subject. This has led to a particular interest in endodontics and performs root canal treatment to a very high standard which has gained him a large referral base from other dentists.
Our approach
Our dedicated team of professionals are committed to providing high-quality care with a patient-centred approach. We understand that the prospect of a root canal can be daunting, which is why we focus on:
  • Comfort: Utilising modern anaesthesia techniques to ensure a pain-free experience.
  • Precision: Employing advanced imaging and instruments for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
  • Efficiency: Completing most treatments in one or two visits.
  • Aftercare: Providing comprehensive guidance to support your recovery and maintain oral health.

Treatment decision
Your journey to a healthier smile begins with a thorough assessment and diagnosis. During your initial visit, we will carry out a detailed examination, often including digital X-rays, to determine the extent of infection and plan the most effective course of treatment. Once the treatment plan including a root canal or endodontics is confirmed, a local anaesthetic is administered to ensure you remain comfortable throughout the procedure.

What to expect
The next step involves carefully removing the infected or inflamed pulp from within the tooth. Using precision instruments, our clinicians clean and shape the root canals, creating an optimal environment for sealing. The canals are then filled with a biocompatible material that helps prevent future infection and maintains the tooth’s structure. Finally, the tooth is sealed and protected with either a temporary or permanent filling. In many cases, a crown will be placed at a later appointment to restore the tooth’s strength and appearance.

Treatment benefits
Root canal treatment offers significant benefits, primarily by relieving the pain and discomfort caused by an infected or damaged tooth. Once treated, the tooth is no longer a source of sensitivity or inflammation, allowing you to eat, speak and smile with confidence once again.

A natural option
This treatment preserves your natural tooth, which is always the preferred option over extraction. Retaining your original tooth helps to maintain the alignment and function of your bite, while also avoiding the need for more extensive restorative work. In addition to the health benefits, the final restoration—usually a crown or composite filling—is carefully matched to the appearance of your natural teeth, ensuring a seamless and aesthetically pleasing result.

Root Canals & Endodontics FAQ

With modern techniques and anaesthesia, root canal treatment is generally no more uncomfortable than having a filling.

Most root canal treatments are completed in one or two appointments, depending on the complexity of the case.

After the procedure, we will provide you with aftercare instructions. It’s important to maintain good oral hygiene and attend regular check-ups to ensure the longevity of the treated tooth.

In many cases, especially for back teeth that endure a lot of pressure when chewing, a crown is recommended after root canal treatment to restore strength and function. A crown helps protect the treated tooth from fracture and provides a long-term, natural-looking restoration. Your dentist will advise you on the most suitable option based on the condition and location of the tooth.

Although root canal treatment is highly successful, in rare cases the infection may return due to complex root anatomy or new decay. If this happens, the tooth can often be successfully retreated. Our experienced team will assess the situation and may recommend a further root canal procedure or, in some cases, a specialist surgical treatment known as an apicectomy. Early intervention gives the best chance of preserving the tooth.
